What is Scenario-Based Learning (SBL)?
Scenario-Based Learning (SBL) is an instructional design strategy that immerses learners in realistic and problem-centered contexts. This approach emphasizes active learning by allowing participants to apply their knowledge and decision-making skills in scenarios that closely mimic real-world situations. Instead of passively consuming information, learners engage with content dynamically, exploring consequences and refining their problem-solving abilities in a risk-free environment [1].
Scenarios can range from simple text-based dilemmas to complex simulations with multimedia elements, depending on the goals and audience. Typically, these scenarios include a narrative, a problem to solve, and multiple decision paths that lead to various outcomes. By working through these scenarios, learners develop critical thinking, adaptability, and confidence in handling real-world challenges [2].
Uses in the ESCORT Project
ESCORT aims to employ SBL to train professionals and first responders involved in emergency management and crisis operations. Through SBL, ESCORT can provide immersive simulations of emergencies such as natural disasters and public health crises. By leveraging realistic crisis scenarios, the project prepares participants to respond effectively under pressure, enhancing their situational awareness and decision-making capabilities.
Scenario development
The scenarios are developed in partnership with healthcare professionals and experts, featuring clear learning objectives designed to educate users on disaster guidelines, policies, innovative tools, methodologies, and the complexities of decision-making in emergency situations. Validation through pilot testing of the scenarios by industry experts and key stakeholders will ensure that the training provided fulfills the intended learning objectives and addresses appropriate healthcare needs within emergency and crisis management.
Conclusion
By offering hands-on experience in simulated environments, the ESCORT project ensures that learners gain the practical skills and confidence needed for real-world crisis management. This approach not only enhances individual competency but also fosters preparedness and resilience, which aligns with the ESCORT projects objectives on increasing preparedness and resilience of healthcare services across Europe.
