On April 30th, 2025, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), one of ESCORT’s consortium partners, successfully conducted a CBRNe Simulation Exercise at the UZ Brussel Emergency Department together with CEDIMED Brussels. This event was part of a comprehensive 3-day training focused on enhancing preparedness and response capacity for chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive (CBRNe) incidents.
The training combined theoretical modules with practical hands-on sessions and high-fidelity simulations. Key topics included the detection of radiological and nuclear substances, use of protective equipment, emergency medical procedures in full PPE (e.g., intubation), and victim decontamination protocols.
Two realistic simulation scenarios were implemented:
-
A suspected Ebola case involving a healthcare worker returning from an endemic area.
-
An explosion in a drug lab scenario requiring the simultaneous decontamination of three victims.
The exercise also served as a testing ground for several innovative technologies:
-
Rinicom’s VideoWall, which provided live video feeds, maps, and communication channels.
-
Cosinuss in-ear sensors to monitor participants’ vital signs in real-time.
-
RealWear AR headsets, allowing seamless communication in full protective gear.
-
Interactive touchboards for note-taking and observation.
The successful integration of these technologies sparked valuable discussions on improving coordination and decision-making during CBRNe emergencies. The event highlighted the importance of combining technological innovation with practical training in order to build a resilient and capable emergency response system.
We congratulate the VUB team on the excellent organisation and execution of this important initiative.
