VUB ReGEDiM Partner Introduction
17.09.2024
The Research Group on Emergency and Disaster Medicine (VUB ReGEDiM) was founded in 2011 and is part of Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), the largest Flemish university in Brussels, Belgium. There is a close collaboration between the research group and the university hospital UZ Brussel, more specifically the emergency department.
The mission of VUB ReGEDiM is to bring emergency and disaster medicine to a higher level by creating and sharing scientific research, field expertise and knowledge. With our rich experiences in Emergency Medicine, we aim to research and create the DNA of emergency & disaster medicine for future generations.
Our research department VUB ReGEDiM ensures an academic grounding for our services and with an extensive network of European and international partners, actively contributing to the internationalization of our activities. VUB ReGEDiM is also the organizing body of the Master of Science in Disaster Medicine (European Master in Disaster Medicine).

The Research Group on Emergency and Disaster Medicine conducts a research program focusing on different aspects of both emergency and disaster medicine:
Emergency Medicine: Training, Quality Assessment and Quality Improvement, Information Technology (IT)-applications, Data Management and Process Analysis, Outcome Predictors in Emergency Medicine, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Developments in Medical Imaging Techniques, Patient Satisfaction and Patient Information, Geriatric & Pediatric Emergency Care and New Technologies like XR and AI.
Disaster Medicine: Evidence-based Disaster Medicine, Modeling and Simulation of Disasters and Disaster Medical Management, Disaster Medical Management, Disaster Mental Health, Disaster Ethics, and New Technologies (AI, UAV’s) in the field of Disaster Medical Response and Response Planning.
VUB ReGEDiM also invests in practical spin-offs from the performed research activities, among which are examples: The Utstein-style template for uniform reporting of acute medical response in disasters, ISEE OnScene and In-Hospital™ (Table Top education and training software program development, based on real and simulated disaster patients), SIMEDIS© (Simulation for the assessment and optimization of medical disaster management) and mathematical tools for logistical decision aid in acute onset disaster medical response.
Our goal is to give every patient the same high-quality care and that is why we are eager to contribute to the ESCORT project.
In the ESCORT project we aim to explore AI, Internet of Things and other innovative technologies to boost solving problems that are happening in health care and emergency medicine.
VUB will be a task contributor in the ESCORT project. We will contribute to the validation of emergency scenarios, share our scientific knowledge and experience, aid in disseminating the project outcomes and are eager to collaborate with other clinical partners and technical partners to research the operational readiness for emergency medicine and health care services.
